Southsea Library
BRIEF
The conversion of the large iconic site of the former Woolworths building in Palmerston Road into a new state of the art library was one of the high profile projects of the continuous rejuvenation of Southsea. The library was to be more than just a space for books, but a community space too with a cafe and Customer Contact Centre where you can catch up on the papers or have a little ‘me time’.
OUR SOLUTIONS
Portsdown worked closely with all the stake holders to help create a bright, vibrant and flowing space that was welcoming to all demographics. Particular attention was paid to the styling and function of the furniture so that all age groups were made to feel comfortable. With the ever changing needs of libraries as a key consideration the shelving selected had casters for flexibility and is easily converted into different types of display shelving. With the integration of the Customer Contact Centre, and ICT training and internet access points into the library, operator seating was an important part of the furniture package. Southsea Library was also the new home of their services for Visually Impaired People - with specially designed IT provision, and a custom designed Learning Zone incorporated into the design.
IMPLEMENTATION
Once our comprehensive furniture package had been selected our dedicated project management team worked closely with the building contractors to formulate a seamless delivery and installation programme so that this fantastic project could be delivered on time and on budget.
Since the library opened they have seen 5000 extra book loans for the same period and excellent feedback from all generations of users, proving the new library has been a very welcome addition to the Southsea environment.
